If a Death Occurs

What to do, who to call, and what we will need from you. You do not have to have any of this ready before you call.

Office hours: please call ahead.

For a death, call (902) 853-5661, any time, day or night.

For everything else, call the office at (902) 882-2457.

First, call us

Call (902) 853-5661 as soon as you can, at any hour. The funeral home should be notified right away, whether the death happens at home, in hospital, in a nursing home, or anywhere else. A hospital, nursing home, clergy member or family member can make the call.

What happens next

Once we have been notified, a funeral director will contact the next of kin, or the person responsible, to set a time to make the arrangements. This meeting normally takes place at the funeral home.

At that meeting we decide the time and place of the visitation and the funeral. The clergy or celebrant must be contacted before those times can be set, so if your family has a minister, priest or celebrant in mind, it helps to reach them early.

You will be asked for personal information about the person who died, along with a set of clothing and a photograph of them.

What to bring when we meet

Bring what you can from this list; if something is missing, we will help you track it down.

  • Full name of the person who died
  • Health card and Social Insurance Numbers
  • Marital status
  • Name of husband or wife
  • Occupation
  • Date and place of birth
  • Father's name and birthplace
  • Mother's name and birthplace
  • Name of physician
  • Cemetery chosen
  • Names of family members, for the obituary

If the death happens away from home

We can help regardless of the circumstances or the place of death, even outside Prince Edward Island. Call us first and we will make the arrangements to bring your family member home.

A hard day
