Michael “Mike” McCartney, of Tignish Prince Edward Island, passed away peacefully on Monday June 29, 2020, at Western Hospital, in nearby Alberton, with his wife, Mary Kinch - the one he laughed with, lived for and loved - at his bedside following an extended hospital stay. Mike was born on July 15, 1936, to Arthur and Marjorie (Douglas) McCartney, in Goderich, Ontario but spent his formative years in Ajax, Ontario.

He was a member of the Ontario Provincial Police and Toronto Metropolitan Police Department before going to work for Suncor and eventually the Ontario Provincial Government from which he retired at age 65.

Longing to return to Mary’s roots, in beautiful PEI, Mike and Mary left Mississauga, Ontario for the picturesque country side of PEI where they built their home in 2001. Warmly welcomed into Mary’s extensive family. Mike took to life on the island like a fish to water. He found joy in the little things – hot dogs and homemade fries, watching baseball, mowing the lawn, reading, daily trips to Eugene’s store and travelling. Even in his last months, his “glass was always half full” as he was thankful for the kindness and care shown by doctors, nurses and the entire staff of Western Hospital.

In Linda Ellis’ poem “The Dash” we are reminded of what matters most – for it is “that dash that represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth”.

Mike is survived by his best friend and love of his life, Mary Kinch, his children Mike McCartney, Ron McCartney, Oshawa, Ontario and Elizabeth (Don) Duhan of Corpus Christi, Texas, his grandson Dakota McCartney, Oshawa, Ontario, siblings Donna Anderchuk, Bill (Barb) McCartney, Ajax, Ontario, Jim McCartney, Oshawa, Ontario, brother-in-law John Ford, Ajax, Ontario, sister-in-law Freda Kinch of Tignish, P.E.I.,the Kinch Family, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, friends and neighbours.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother Robert (Bud) McCartney, sisters Judith (Judy) Ford and Dorothy (Betty) Smith, sister-in-law Mary McCartney, brothers-in-law Russ Smith, Pete Anderchuk and Adrian Kinch.

Our family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Western Hospital. Their dedication and effort to provide quality and compassionate care over the last months were a heartwarming blessing to our entire family. We thank God for the gift of Mike’s life and the blessing of the time we spent with him.

Arrangements entrusted to West Prince Funeral Home, Palmer Road. No service or viewing by personal request.
