Alphonse J. Profit
May 12, 2021

Alphonse was born in Alberton Hospital on May 21st 1949. the son of the late Gerald and Mary (Knox) Profit. At the early age of 8, Alphonse lost his father and felt it was his responsibility to become the man of the house. Being the second oldest of 6 at the time and soon to be 7 he focused his life around farming and helping his mother provide for his siblings. Along with farming, and trading horses Alphonse wore many hats and made many friends along the way. He hauled their family potato harvest with a horse and wagon to St. Louis to be sold. He also unloaded coal trains, worked for William and Murphy as a labourer when both St. Louis and ME Callaghan Schools were constructed. He worked for Ken Pridham as a tractor mechanic eventually working for Barry Costain and Lowell McInnis at what was known to eventually become Profits Garage. In Sept. of 1970 he was married and started his family. Continuing to work at various jobs in the nearby communities, as the late 1970’s approached, he was employed in the construction of Elmsdale grain elevator. Upon completion of that job, he set his sights on purchasing the corner garage where he continued to work as an auto mechanic until the year 2000 when they built a new convenience store.
Phonse as he was known to most was an avid horseman, always finding time to make a trade, hitch a team, shoe horses, practice blacksmithing and tell tall tales as any horse trader would. In his later years, he was able to teach himself to use the computer and scroll through websites finding horses for sale all around the country and would try to talk someone into calling about them. Phonse had four children, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He formed a special bond with his grandson Nathan and his wish for Nathan to carry on horse trading and farming the family farm like the Profit’s before him.
As he got older, he could be found at the store sitting on his bench outside or on his chair, waiting for a chat, giving out treats to the kids and collecting gossip as he truly loved to do.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Wendy Profit (Costain) sons and daughters Joseph (Kathy) Profit, Rebecca Profit, Vicki (Jason) Webster and Scott Profit. Grandchildren Kendall (Faith), Nathan, Beth & Emma Profit, Charleigh & Karson Webster, 2 great-grandchildren Harlow and Ella Profit. Dear brother of Barbara (Fred) Gavin, Dorothy Ellsworth, Carolyn (Archie) O’Halloran, Bertha (Roy) Butler, Eileen (Earl) O’Halloran, sister-in-law Lissa Profit, sister and brother Debbie and Rayburn Dunn and David Costain. Predeceased by brother Gerald in 2010 and brother-in-law Robert Ellsworth in 2014, mother and father-in-law Marne and Laura Costain.
